Eyelid Ptosis (drooping eyelid)

Eyelid Ptosis (drooping eyelid)

Eyelid ptosis consists of the drooping or descent of the upper eyelid, affecting one eye or both eyes, which makes the eye look smaller and the eyelid can even cover the pupil partially or completely.  In addition to being an aesthetic problem, it can become a functional problem, because it can affect the visual field and vision.

There are multiple causes that cause eyelid ptosis. The most common is senile or aging ptosis. Other diseases can also cause it, such as myasthenia gravis, or paralysis of certain nerves that control eyelid movements. Chronic contact lens wear or chronic eyelid rubbing can also cause it in some cases.

Ptosis can also be congenital, meaning it is present from birth. In children born with eyelid ptosis that covers the pupil, there may be a delay in the development of vision known as amblyopia or “lazy eye”, so it is important to correct the position of the eyelid early.
