Chalazion is the inflammation and obstruction of one or more Meibomian glandsMeibomian glands are located in the eyelids and their function is to secrete substances in the tear film. A chalazion is very obvious; it's a small lump or cyst located under the skin of the eyelid. It's sometimes visible to the naked eye or at least felt when palpated as a small "lump" on the eyelid.

Surgery is performed on all patients with chalazia who have failed conventional treatment. If the lesion persists for more than two months or rapidly increases in size, it is recommended to remove it through a simple procedure.

Chalazia surgery involves making a small incision on the inside of the affected eyelid to remove the contents of the affected gland without leaving any visible marks. It is a brief and minimally invasive procedure. In larger cases or cases with skin involvement, a small 1-2 mm cut in the skin may be necessary, which is usually imperceptible once healed.

After surgery, the eye is usually left covered until the next day. As treatment, an eye drop or ointment containing antibiotics and corticosteroids is applied for a few days.

Follow-up with an ophthalmologist is performed within the first 2 to 4 weeks. Chalazia surgery is a simple and safe procedure.

The patient can generally drive the day after the procedure and return to work the day after. As with any eyelid procedure, a small hematoma may occur in the area, which should disappear within 10 days.
