Excimer laser refractive surgery is used to correct myopia,

Excimer laser refractive surgery allows for the correction of nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. The surgery is performed by applying a special laser beam to the cornea (the first transparent lens of the eye). It is performed with anesthetic drops. There are two different techniques, and the decision is made based on the specific characteristics of each eye. One is called LASIK, which results in a disability of approximately 48 hours after the procedure. The other technique is called Trans-PRK, which results in a disability of 10 to 14 days.

Candidates for this surgery must be over 19-20 years old, have a stable defect, and not present other ocular alterations. Additionally, in patients over 50 years old, this type of surgery with excimer laser is generally not ideal, and another type of slightly more complex operation may be required, called phacoemulsification plus intraocular lens implantation for refractive purposes. When applying this technique, the laser shapes the cornea, that is, changes its shape. This corrects the diopters associated with myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism.

Furthermore, it should be noted that eye surgery with Excimer laser includes two types of techniques:

In LASIK, a cut is first made in the cornea with a femtosecond laser, then the surface of the cornea is lifted, and then the excimer laser is used to reshape the cornea to correct the diopters. The postoperative period is rapid, and discomfort is minimal. 

The PRK technique, in this case, uses a laser to act directly on the cornea. The postoperative period is somewhat more uncomfortable and painful, and vision recovery is somewhat slower.

Both techniques have been used for years and are recommended for prescription defects that do not exceed 5 or 6 diopters.
